Sundowns Downed By Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns lost to Orlando Pirates in a thrilling Absa Premiership encounter at Loftus Stadium on Saturday afternoon, to move up to third on the log standings.

Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Mpho Makola and Luvuyo Memela scored the goals for the visitors. Percy Tau’s first-half strike was not enough for ‘Downs, who continue to struggle at home this season.

With the 6-0 thumping from last season still fresh in the memory of those – especially the Pirates fans – who gathered in the country’s capital, it came as a huge sigh of relief for The Ghost when it was they who opened the scoring.

Nyauza hammered home within the first two minutes after the Brazilians failed to clear their lines from a corner kick.

Sundowns went in search of an immediate reply and were only denied the equaliser through the brilliance of Jackson Mabokgwane. Themba Zwane, Tiyani Mabunda and Percy Tau were almost in disbelief as the shot-stopper came up with the goods for the visitors.

Having weathered the storm, Pirates doubled their lead in the 18th minute. Makola produced a great finish following a defensive blunder from Motjeka Madisha, who coughed up possession in a dangerous position.

Memela squandered a golden chance to increase the Buccaneers’ lead moments after the half-hour mark. Mabokgwane provided the quick release to send the attacker on his bike, but with only Denis Onyango to beat – he could only succeed in guiding his attempt over the crossbar.

The Brazilians finally found the back of the net with 38 minutes on the clock. Themba Zwane produced the defence-splitting pass to tee up Percy Tau who made no mistake, firing an unstoppable left-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Pirates, though, were not done as Memela rattled the woodwork after Onyango misjudged a ball into the area. The visitors were deservedly in front as the two teams headed for the tunnel at the break.

After the break, with Sundowns turning the screw, it was no surprise to see Anthony Laffor make his way onto the pitch on the hour mark. He should’ve pulled the hosts level with 66 minutes on the clock.

The Liberia international skied his attempt with the goal at his mercy – to the frustration of Pitso Mosimane who ran down the touchline in dissatisfaction.

Sundowns continued to dominate possession and territory, but were ultimately punished for their failure to convert a succession of chances as Memela put the game to bed.

The Pirates attacker, who bagged a brace in their victory over Baroka FC last weekend, sent an unstoppable shot past Onyango in the 83rd minute.

Victory moves the Sea Robbers up to third place on the log standings, five points off the Brazilians who occupy the summit.

Somewhat disappointing Onyango lately. He’s not to blame alone though but his game has dropped. We played well yesterday. Just that Pirates took their chances and we didn’t. The team looked very tired. Ajax made us run midweek and it showed yesterday. Nothing is lost yet. We still in front. I still believe the league is ours. We just need to manage things better.

  2. Ndura

Pirates wanted it more than us. I have a concern with Vila’s perfoman ce so far and I just hope he can improve because he is really letting us down

You tell me if I happen to be wrong Downs. At times the experience of Thabo Nthete is clearly visible. The losses we have suffered, Polokwane and Pir are as a result of defensive errors. Our defence is not up to par. S. Zwane, Madisha and Nascimento, hmmm!

  4. Thabo J

We did not play well and not too bad. My worry is our defensive structure composition of S. Zwane, Madisha and Nascimento leaves a lot to be desired. The experience of Thabo “Mr Cool” Nthethe is clearly evident and more in demand at this stage until we sort out this weakness.

  5. Dion M/East

things are like this because of three mans Vila,Madisha and Nascimento.Sundowns is playing a highly football.Mshishi is too confident

    1. Shando

Siyanda is good player member, we need him. Let us encourage him to get better…We heard that Mbekile does not want to play right back so you can’t force since he will cost us too!!! Let’s hope Siyanda gets better, and Morena recovers in time. With Ngconga also injury we were left thin at right back and Pirates capitalised on that.

  6. Sam-4-Downz

We demand the league title this season or someone must pay a hefty price! I don’t know who it must be, but it seems the coaches favourates are disappointing him. Teams now don’t fear Downs anymore especially when they think about our defense. We lost 9 points out of 12 , how pathetic can we be?

    1. Haaahaaahaaa 😀😀😀. That’s very rich coming from you Sam-4-Downz. I never thought you’ll see things the way some of us see it and have been complaining about. Fact of the matter is, management has invested a lot of money in this team and we should be reaping better rewards than we’re getting now. They must start setting up the mandates for the team

  7. Joseph

Favouritism is gradually killing team. Madisha is costing us a lot and Pitso plays blind. How can we sign two injured new players?

    1. Shando

I am not sure if there is favourtisim member, I believe that players have gotten so comfortable by knowing that they are featuring in the starting 11. Madisha’s game has gone down off late and the sooner they work on it the better. We know there are other factors that can be attributed to his perfomance but he is costing us dearly.

Onyango my keeper, You seem to be costing us a lot lately as well…what happened? Is he tired..perhaps he deserves a rest too

  8. Shando

Masandawana, Are wheels coming off or what? I hope the technical team, under the leadership of Jingles and the new technical director (whom i presume has got a lot to offer i hope) should start by sorting out the defensive frailties that we are witnessing. School boy errors to say the least….

Pirates were pressing us from the first minute, and you should think that players are aware of that and play a long ball so we catch them early on, but not we persist in doing certain silly things that lead us to concede a corner, and eventually the first goal.

And am not going to blame S. Zwane alone for the loss, the boy’s legs were heavy and could see he lacked match fitness and that was our downfall. The combination of Keke, Manyisa and Mabunda leaves a lot to be desired…Who is supposed to do what there…We are short going foward and Villa, Percy and Themba seems to be doing all the work of getting us to get goals but the defensive three(which i believe they are since they are not getting us anything at the moment going foward) needs to pull their socks as matter of urgency.

And Coach…Please fix that Defensive three (3) structure, as it seem our Captain seems to get lost and Oupa whom i praised against Polokwane, seems to be gotten back to his old sickness of always playing the ball backwards all the time.

Please Jingles let us fix the mess, otherwise we will be Slayed by CHIPS big time..I watched Majunju’s game and was envious of how they play these days..they play with purpose.. Please Pitso we can’t turn to be a laughing stock just when we are about to start Champions league…

After last week’s win against Ajax I posted that I wasn’t convinced coz I had seen just how slow our entire team is. Any technical team that at this day & age still plans around abo Arendse, Madisha and Langerman while there are plenty of fast paced defenders around is dreaming to think they can challenge for the league & the Champions League. The current Sundowns team is seriously weak, Villa is not offering us anything yet he’s guarantied game time whenever he isn’t on his sick bed. Pitso has side-lined very good players to a point where those without a sharp football eye see them as useless, players that come to mind include Ijeke from Nija, Ngele, Mahachi, Lebese, Pelembe and many others. Whether or not the midfield comprised of Manyisa, Kekana & Mabunda produces anything he is surely going to continue with them for they are his favourites. Many times our coach tell us about his building for Champions League but my assessment says we are just to far away from it, we cant fail locally and expect to excel in the continent. Lets accept the reality that we aren’t prepared to challenge for the 2017-18 league & many other cups, the difference between us and KC is just that we are currently at the summit but if we don’t make drastic measures to rectify our shortfalls the league is gone looking at how pirates and other so called small teams are playing.

I love Downs but I’m not convinced about its performance right from the technical team.

It is so disappointing with so many chances created but could not convert those chances into goals but not all is lost we will win the league this season.KBY

  11. Paul

Onyango, very disappointing this days, he seems not to communicate with the defence. The defence is not communicating to each other that is why they end up going for the same ball. The middle fied is not pressing enough and have tendency of let opposition player pass them without a fight and not supporting the strikers. The strikers are not passing each other properly and obviously their finishing is poor.

As for technical team, they I think they are not managing the team properly, it seems there is lot of unhappy players.

  12. ayanda sithole

our defence cost us this game , they were slow and sloppy I think the coach and the Technical team should try Arendse or Nthethe for the upcoming game and I hear that Brockie is on the verge of signing so as Siyabonga Zulu and Katlego Otladisa whom I believe will be the perfect replacement for Khama. KBY

    1. Kagiso Jafta

Exactly I agree with you Ayanda. The central defence on Saturday did not do well at all. Memela was running straight onto Madisha and Nascimento with ease. Eish our own Rhulani Mokena planned our downfall very well. But it was a good game of football.

  13. muzi kunene

If Pitso is doing rotation every player at Downs will be matchfit but he stick to his favorites that’s why when the favorites are injured those who take their place doesn’t cope because they lack match fitness. Our coach even we play cups he stick to the same starting eleven and hope they will also perform every time.
Nedbank Cup and Champions League are around the corner but Pitso will say why fix if its not broken, Zwane tried his level best after sitting on grandstand for a long time and I also see some fatigue to Kekana and Langermanbp but our coach doesn’t rest them and it strange when Pitso don’t trust other players as if they didn’t brought by him at Downs he was forced by Management to signed them.Mahachi,Ejike and Ntuli etc were signed by him but all of a sudden he hated them and the Management just keep quiet and continue to buy him players, Kby forever.

  14. Mzimela

Pitso believe to foreign player Onyanga just gud fo croses straight shoot no there is Thela not given chance simiral situation to Razak not better than Ngobe he recruited Zakri i wonder what he attrack him now he have to pave spor for Brockie even that Brockie no guaranteed he would copy on Sundown style will simiral to Villa spend millions rand fail to produce lets hope new technical director to change to buy tendancy if can get 2 players play as Tau Sundowns will be untouchable

    1. Members,Dennis is the best goalkeeper in Africa.the problem is the defense ,how many one on ones does Dennis save per match? relax you are a Sundowns supporter don’t panic like all the Zebras and the Rats. The goals are coming.members you have started to make noise like these small teams.we had chances and no luck it happens in football.I would like to thank the boys for trying so much to win the game unfortunately the lady luck was on leave.

  15. Krok

Eva since nacimento came back we r poor n conciding a lot of goals, kgante where is Rivaldo cootzee? Siyanda zwane n onyango the less said about those 2 the better lately, kgante what’s happening lately mara? Is it just a slump or is our players not hungry anymore? Or r they 2 complacent n confident? Or r the players tired? Hlompho n mabunda r also not convincing anymore y mara? Vilakazi the less said the better, langerman misses easy chances n his defending is suspicious lately, themba zwane the past 2 games was not playing like we know he can, oupa manyisa gives more back passes than forward-passes, mxm eish my heart is soooooo painful mara I know n believe in the mighty sundowns n i know we shall bounce back no-other way. #kby 4 life

    1. Thabo J

9 months injured and the other one did not get game time for almost 6 months if am correct. You can easily guess as to which players am i referring to. I would suggest that in such instances, these players should be gradually introduced especially when we are sure a win until they get to focus, gain momentum and catch up the rhythm.

  16. bucks

We have no direction at all. To add to your view Joseph I heard we signed Katlego Otadisa (broken leg) and Zulu all from Platinum Stars. An addition to Rivaldo Coetzee (has broken foot) and Aubrey Ngoma (hamstring injury). And in return we are loosing cap[able players who are free from injuries. Now tell me if there is any logic in this

  17. Peter

I am now convinced… Pitso with his tired players are breaking Sundowns…. Langerman. Madisha, Kekana, Mabunda Siyanda Zwane, Vilakazi ….. I don’t know what to say, but I wish this Swedish Technical Director can just tell Pitso straight in his face that his team is slow and weak!!! any team in the PSL with fast players can beat Sundowns… I am just sick!!!

  18. Joseph

Pitso must be investigated, he might be criminally colluding with the agents, this is unbelievable. We do have better players like Ncele, Mbhekile and others but he cannot utilise them. How can he let Mnghonyama and Castro leave so easily and while he is signing an injured players? What was the use of signing Lebese and Manyisa, what did they brought in to team? Some strategic system using by Pitso needs queried.

  19. Kagiso Jafta

Can we genuinely take care of this gift from God that is Percy Tau? The boy is a genius,SA should invest in this gem and take him to Europe as soon as possible. He played well on Saturday, we lost to a good team on the day. But honestly we let the lead at the top slip by losing games in hand , it happens all seasons and its a wake up call.

  20. Sibusiso Mthendeni

Congratulations to Sundowns fc and everyone who is associated to this team for making another history. After NSL, PSL was born and Sundowns is the very first team to reach 1000 goals. Thanks to Percy Tau for making sure we get that goal last Saturday.
Since PSL started, Sundowns is the very first team to reach 1000 goals #congratulations yellow family.

    Sundowns 1-3 Pirates:
Pirates ya trapa strue, bazofa mahn. Congratulation to Orlando Pirates, they won. No complains or excuses on my side, I think we were lucky to only concede 3 goals. I think their number 11 (Memela) was very angry and on form that day. From the word go, he ran to our defence non-stop.

Hard luck #Masandawana, we will bounce back. I won’t dwell too much about that game, ndisasebuhlungu kakhulu. Conceding 7 goals in 3 games aikhona, but I won’t point fingers. We are Sundowns, Sundowns is us!

Welcome Brockie to Dawana Supersport have confirmed on their Twitter account no more headache on missing so many chances by our front line and Sirino will be signed soon,Mina I will say now you’ll get a nickname kithina but Mina okwamanje I will say “JB”.

  22. Max Moloi

Sundowns play good soccer still , just that we are really not organised at the back and our Goalkeeper is really not in the right space , most shots he is failing to stop are slow and within reach , Nascimento , Zwane , Madisha and Vilakazi are not pulling their weights . Sundowns is no mickey mouse team and if this is not corrected heads will fall , Pitso will not be spared as well if he keeps fielding off form players like Onyango , Nascimento, Madisha .

    1. Member no head will fall as we only need luck we create a lot of chances but the conversion is not good, relax the coach will do his are a Sundowns Supporter.Sundowns will win the leaque and Caf.

  23. Senzwa

We played well but i must say i am disappointed with our defense. Once again our defense is becoming our achilles heel. Its not only the back four where Morena and Madisha are suspect. It is also our defensive midfield where Kekana, Manyisa and Mabunda operate. Three defensive players and our defense is still left exposed. What’s the use of playing three defensive midfielders when our defense is still exposed. It means the team lacks balance. There is a defensive player that is playing an attacking role but is not good enough compared to the attacking players on the bench. My two cents worth of advise: Morena must play attacking role and compete with T Zwane et al. Ngongca must play right back position as we do not concede many when he is playing. One of Manyisa or Kekana must sit on the bench. Laffor, Lebese or Brockie now that we got him, must start or Sekotlong for that matter.

  24. Nakana@ DOWNS4EVER

The absence of Bangaly has killed us,with him around we played 5 games without conceding a single goal, now we concede in every game.Secondly Hlompho is killing us with his careless passes,90% of his passes find the opponents,if u don’t bliv me check our last 3 games and call me to this number if I’m wrong (0735580882) and yet he plays every game,he can’t even ran..Langerman also is useless, against Ajax he failed to deliver 1 decent cross. Our technical team is very poor they have only 1 formation whether we lose or win even though we play against various teams using different formations, ours doesn’t change. The Kekana,Mabunda and Manyisa partnership has destroyed our beloved team,we only attack with Vila,Temba and Percy others are holding back and we spend most of our time playing at the back or playing useless back passes and my question is who was playing where Manyisa plays b4 he was signed? We are not adding numbers upfront when attacking.Pitso complains about fatigue while he had fresh players on the bench and in the stands, why sign players when u don’t trust them?Pitso doesn’t what he wants,he pleaded with management to get him players like,Malatjila,Ngele,Zakri,Hachi and Wome, what happened to them, did they become bad players after joining Downs?.Above all this we have old and lazy player,I think us and Wits are the ones with more old players.Lastly we are over working Tau he has a never die attitude and we really need him for us to win the trophies so let’s bench one btwin Kekana or Manyisa and put in an offensive player to assist Tau ,Temba and Villa coz putting 3 defensive midfielders doesn’t help us,we lost many games with those 3 players in the field.

    1. Thabo J

Nakana@ DOWNS4EVER, although i do not agree wholly with what you stated, i am obliged to concur with the fact that technically we are not getting things right which a point that is clearly visible in what you mentioned. Players are played out of positions at time, players not fit and haven’t being playing for up to 9 months are preferred instead of those that are fit and raring to go.

The other issue is that of parking the bus and complaining about teams playing defensive football. All the teams have ways and means of trying to secure their positions in the league, utilizing good or bad tactics that would result in winning or playing draws.

We cannot dictate as to how they must plan and play. Why not come up with ways and means of bypassing those kind of tactics and render them useless? It is the coaches job to ensure that together with the technical team, they come up with different tactics, formations and plans in order to deal with that.

If we happened to be matched pound for pound like Pirates did, we simply cannot come up with a solution. Cape Town City, Chippa and Polokwane City came and we couldn’t device means to overcome them. Why because we are very much one dimensional and not able to evolve with the match. Once our regular tactics and our trump cards are dealt with by our opponents, we get lost and become predicable and cannot come up with surprises because we lack plan B. That is our main downfall.

This is only an opinion and an observation. It might be different from one fan/supporter to the other and that is normal. Big Up Bafana Ba Style!

  25. Makhosonke

    welcome Brockie.
    best 11 yet

  26. Mphetshwa M

We welcome the arrival of another madala in Brockie, just how the management &the technical team comprising of Pitso not thinking from the box at all.How many years Brockie will stay at the club?Just wondering how long will the player b on the books of the team.Mr short-term solutions Mosimane can u plz wake up from Disney’s land&stop messing with Sundowns finances,by bringing old crocks &there is nothing to write home about the arrival of Brockie.People must stop blaming Onyango &look at the defence holistically.Next thing he will b lying to the media that clubs r upping the price, where’s he is just using Sundowns money as a showoff rather than a gòod investment. We conceding goals like a sieve bcoz we r giving away young blood of abo Mabaso,Mngonyama Mkhwanazi,Letlabika&Bongi Ntuli. Brockie is just brought to make those pedestrian play.

  27. Mphetshwa M

There we go again, sometimes this nonsense of allowing a coach to choose a player that must come to play for the club is always not coming with good results. There is this rumour that Fares Hachi&Zakri r leaving Sundowns to make way for Brockie&the prospect of the coming Bolivian/Uruguayan player.I was asking the same question is it compulsory to buy a foreigner even if we don’t need him.Brimah&Nascimento including the abovementioned two we never needed them&they can’t even influence the game excepting to hold your breath as to what mistakes r they going to commit.

  28. Joseph

I’m with you Mphetshwa M, this coaches sometimes get kickbacks from agents. Brockie wont bring any difference to the Masandawan family, but a conflict to the other players as he didn’t come cheap. What is the difference between Brockie and Castro? This is just a waste of Patrice’s money. If we can’t win the PSL League with all material we have, Pitso must excuse himself and employ someone with a fresh mind. For years working for Downs but still struggling to get a combination or a consistence winning team. He keeps on blaming Laffor, why doesn’t blame his lovely son Vilakazi?

    1. Member leave the monies to management, you don’t contribute money here bacause you don’t have it.just come and support and don’t be a people are criticising everything.

  29. Romario

Comment*I really don’t know what pitso sees in madisha that we can’t see. he’s slow, playful, can’t mark, can’t read the game and can’t make a pass. I still wonder how the hell he made it to Downs it still baffles me. langerman, I call him freeway but he’s guaranteed game time anywhere! coach all I’m asking from you is to be fair.

  30. Shingirayi Zimunya

Its a painful time Masandawana, but the truth must be said. I fear that some players who are good and even excellent are being frozen out of the team by the Technical team. I don’t understand why Mbekile is no longer featuring. I don’t understand why Mr Cool Nthethe, Farres Hachi are no longer featuring. The last few games, our defence has been shambolic and disorganized. I don’t blame Onyango, he will concede because he has no protection at all. How does a defender run next to an attacker from the centre line and not tackle until that attacker chooses a spot and scores??? I know that there is drama surrounding Khama Billiat and his refusal to sign another contract. Most supporters have called him names and blamed him, I however blame our technical team and management. Clearly they are failing to manage the expectations of players and they are failing to convince our players to stay. We had drama when Keagan Dolly wanted to leave, now we also have drama with Khama. It can’t be that the players are wrong, its poor man management. Castro left after becoming a shadow of his former self due to a lack of game time, now the same is happning to the Ngeles, Malajilas, Ngobenis, and many others. What is the purpose of buying so many players if the coach doesn’t believe in changing or rotating the team??? Mind you, we have a youth structure but only Makgalwa is being given a few minutes, yet he is a good player. Why can’t the coach rotate the squad? Right now, due to Pitso’s zero rotation policy, Kekana, Mabunda, Langerman and T. Zwane are tired and drained. Yet he still plays them. Soon Tau will get a serious injury due to being overplayed without rest. How will a squad of over 30 players be match fit if only 11 are used regularly? I am also beginning to question Pitso’s tactics. Why do we fail to adopt our tactics to suit particular games? We keep playing the same way even when we are losing. Every team now knows that if you want to beat Sundowns, simply let them have the ball, then catch them on the counter because their right back and left back always leave spaces behind when they go upfront to join the attack. This is how Polokwane City, Pirates and Cape Town City beat us. Yet, our coach will sit there and play the same formation. In my view, Pitso is now too comfortable and he is forgetting that we haven’t won any silverware since last year. We cannot praise him and not criticize. We need radical change and fast!!! I still believe if we tie down Billiat, play him with Tau, Brockie, or alternatively, Makgalwa, Ngoma and Sekotlong we will have the best attack. Mohomi needs to get a chance to play because Kekana needs a rest. Tau must also get a rest so that we don’t kill him through overplaying him. I feel like the CBD was used and dumped. The CBD played 90 percnt of our matches in 2 years, then when their performances dropped due to fatigue, they were thrown away especially Castro and Billiat. On any night in Africa an injury-free Khama Billiat is as good as any African star player you can think of. He matched Riyaad Mahrez attack for attack in a 2017 Afcon game, yet we throw away and fail to tie down or at least sell such talent. Mangoba Mngithi said it best when he said the entire CBD should have been sold after winning the Champions League and that would have helped their careers and created space for more talent, yet our Yellow nation just blocked any bids and held on to those players only to dump them and freeze them out of the team.

    1. Senzwa

You can’t rotate the team if you want to win the league member. Your team selection must be consistent so that you don’t disrupt the rhythm of the team. I just question whether the right players are being selected, e.g. a three man defensive middlefield or Morena (defensive qualities questionable) or Langerman (he seems disinterested at times). Otherwise i don’t have a problem with the coach having favourites, it must just be the right favourites. All coaches have their preferences when it comes to team selection. I still believe Pitso is the best even though I sometimes disagree with some of his experiments and tactics.

    2. Member you very confused, you are complaining that players must be kept and not released by the team at the same time you agree with Manqoba that the players should have been sold long time a big story but eventually you cancelled it.

      1. Member you are very confused, you are complaining that players must be kept and not released by the team at the same time you agree with Manqoba that the players should have been sold long time wrote a big and long story but eventually you cancelled it

  31. Menduza

The whole defence is appalling, Right, Left and CentreBacks, We won against Arrows and Maritzburg but both teams played better than us, Yes Mmbs in this website are correct, why are we signing players that we don’t trust? We brought Sekotlong, Lebese, Hachi, Mohomi but we can’t give them a chance, we create many chances than the opposition, but end up on the loosing side, Come On Guys! Let’s reshuffle

    1. yes member we need to shuffle,Critics like you ko morao,Supporters ko about that.this year sundowns need supporters and not makhalanjalo ko morao.leave the coach to do his job please.

  32. Krok Original

I have long complained about this 3 man central midfield formation even when we were winning and I am glad that many bloggers here have seen the shortcomings of this system.

  33. members the long wait is over,we have Sirino,Mngoma,Brockie plus percy,Anthony Laffor,Themba Zwane, with Hlompho supplying them with those passess, eintlik ba fedile batho from now ons vat alles.mara why caf e sa qale mara ye,were is that wydad.tell everybody that ons is kom.
